Parker Bohn III Wins Treasure Island Open
With just three tournaments left in the year, Parker Bohn III has secured his place as a serious contender for PBA50 Player of the Year by winning the Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open presented by Roto Grip. The win marks Bohn’s second PBA50 Tour title this season (having previously won the Pasco County Florida Open, the opening event of this year’s PBA50 season) and is yet another in a long list of tournament wins over the bowler’s long career. To win the title, Bohn defeated St. Ann, MO’s Peter Weber. Weber has an impressive record of his own, holding a total of 37 PBA tour wins. Between Weber and Bohn alone, they held 71 titles going in to the Treasure Island Open.
Before facing Weber in the title match, Bohn also defeated Ron Mohr (an eight-time PBA50 Tour champion and two-time winner of the PBA50 Player of the Year), PBA50 Tour rookie and fellow Player of the Year contender Mike Scroggins (the only other two-time winner in this year’s tournament, along with Bohn), and Brian Voss, a PBA50 Hall of Fame member and 25-time PBA Tour winner.
As the race for PBA Player of the Year heats up, Bohn and his fellow tour mates are also fighting to earn entry into the GEICO World Series of Bowling VII, to be held in Reno this year. The top eight players with the most competition points will earn entry into the World Series event, during which they will compete for two championship match spots in the ESPN-televised PBA Challenge finals. As of the standings after the Treasure Island Open, Bohn is comfortably seated in the top eight point earners, as are Mohr, Scroggins, and Weber.
RIP John Hricsina, Former PBA50 Player of the Year
John Hricsina of Franklin, Pennsylvania, the 1990 PBA50 Player of the Year and a seven-time PBA50 Tour champion, has passed away. Over the course of his career, Hricsina competed in nearly 200 PBA50 events, earned almost $400,000, and appeared in 48 events broadcast on television. Additionally, Hricsina won five PBA50 regional titles, and is one of only seven players to bowl a 300 game in a championship round, which he accomplished during his defeat of Avery LeBlanc at the Reno Open in 1996. He is also one of only four players to bowl four 300 games during a single season, which he accomplished in 1991.
Though 1990 was the year he earned the Player of the Year title, Hricsina’s only multiple win season came in 1993, when he won the Canadian Senior Open and the Rocky Mountain Senior Open. His last PBA50 tournament win was at the 1998 Showboat Vermont PBA Senior Classic, when he defeated Pete Couture in a dramatic sudden-death roll-off after the two tied the championship match at 215-215.
Hricsina’s seven tour wins leaves him one win short of consideration for the PBA50 Senior Hall of Fame.
