Mastering the Art of Bowling: What Skill Set is Required?

You may have heard rumors that bowling is a dying sport, but this is far from the case. If you love bowling, you aren’t alone–in fact, at least 67 million Americans head off to the bowling alley and hit the lanes in an average year.

If you want to be as good a bowler as possible and wow your family and friends, there are a few skills you’ll need to learn. It’s not just something that comes naturally to people- like any other sport, practice is crucial to doing well.

Read on to learn how to master the art of bowling and get strike after strike after strike!

Know How It Works

Before you can be successful at any game, it’s crucial to understand the rules. Peruse through a bowling rule book or two if you aren’t 100% sure what you’re doing, because you can’t master even the basics if you don’t have a strong grasp on your goals and intended outcomes.

Basically, you want to knock as many pins over as possible. Strikes are the best- these happen when you knock all of them down in one go. Spares are also good, meaning that you hit all the pins in one turn of two rolls. There’s obviously more to it than that, though, so look into the rules and get ready to begin!

Aim Carefully

If you’re a righty, you probably want to aim between the 1 and 3 pins. If you’re a lefty, then that spot between the 1 and 2 is for you. Most bowlers say that these are the ideal places to aim and that you’ll see the most success if you try to hit there.

Two factors that will improve your aim are your posture and eye placement. Make sure that you’re standing straight and tall so you won’t accidentally trip up and throw the ball in the wrong place. Also, make sure your eyes are looking at the precise spot you want to hit the pins–this will make your hands more likely to throw in that direction.

Keep Your Composure

Though it has a physical aspect, bowling is, above all, a mental sport. It requires a lot of mental preparation, focus, and composure to be successful and knock down as many pins as you can. If you aren’t focused, you’ll have poor hand-eye coordination. Your aim will suffer.

Make sure that between shots you take a moment to refocus on the game. Clear your mind of all other concerns. Nothing exists but you, the ball, and the pins.

Be the Best at Bowling!

Becoming an expert at any sport is no easy task, but it’s a lot of fun. Plus, bowling is one of the best sports you can play when it comes to the balance between competition and relaxation.
